Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES)
American Red Cross paid and volunteer staff meets the special needs of military personnel and their families 24 hours a day. When emergencies arise, Red Cross caseworkers use a unique communication network to provide a link between members of our armed forces any place in the world and their loved ones waiting back home.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- AFES Caseworker
- Provide 24-hour messaging capability and emergency support to armed forces members as part of a world-wide emergency communications network.
Blood Services
Providing blood services is a fundamental part of Red Cross – humanitarian mission. Nationally, the Red Cross collects and distributes half the nation’s blood supply. Locally, the Red Cross hosts more than 100 bloodmobiles each year to provide individuals with convenient locations to donate life-saving blood and blood products.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- Donor
- Donate whole blood and/or platelets at the Community Donor Center (CDC) located at 1900 Tate Springs Road, Lynchburg, Virginia, (434) 846-4620 or at a convenient mobile site.
- Movile/CDC Worker
- Assist with a range of tasks at bloodmobiles and/or the CDC.
Disaster Services
Prior to a disaster striking, the Red Cross works with our community partners to help anticipate and prevent disasters by providing practical and helpful awareness and educational information that shows the public how to save lives, reduce injuries, and protect their homes. When disaster strikes, the American Red Cross feeds, clothes and shelters disaster victims and emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member
- Be on the chapter’s first line of response in disaster situations. Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) – Become a highly trained Red Cross disaster volunteer who responds to affected areas quickly and efficiently whether 5 blocks or 5,000 miles from home.
- Community Disaster Education (CDE) Presenter
- Speak to the public about the Red Cross in general, Volunteer Opportunities:, fundraising and/or disaster preparedness.
Health & Safety Services
The Red Cross is the recognized premier provider of first aid, CPR, aquatics, water safety, and other health and safety education programs. The Historic Virginia Chapter offers a variety of programs for different age groups and both general and professional audiences, including, but not limited to, Standard First Aid, Community First Aid and Safety, First Aid for Children Today (F.A.C.T.), Sport Safety Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Longfellow’s Whale Tales (for Children), Learn to Swim (levels I to VII), Community Water Safety and Lifeguard Training, and Babysitting.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- Per Diem Instructor
- Teach Red Cross health and safety courses in the community and/or workplace.
HIV/AIDS Education
In keeping with current national health care needs, the American Red Cross offers HIV/AIDS educational programs targeted to meet the needs of various audiences. The American Red Cross’ goal is to prevent the spread of HIV by encouraging people to respond in informed ways to both the risk of HIV infection as well as to people who have HIV, and by helping people to apply the facts about HIV to their own behavior. The programs include, but are not limited to, Basic FACTS: Discussing HIV & AIDS and/or Facts in Focus, and Prevention Skills: Understanding the risk Related to HIV and Developing Prevention Skills.

- Facilitate HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and prevention workshops and activities.
- Community Collaborator
- Bring HIV/AIDS awareness and education activities to your community or organization in collaboration with the HIV/AIDS Education Coordinator.
International Services
The mission of international services is to relieve human suffering wherever it may be found; protect life and health; ensure respect of the human being, particularly in times of armed conflict and natural disaster; help prevent disease; promote health and social welfare; and encourage voluntary service. To this end, the Historic Virginia Chapter provides tracing, message and reunion services between people in the U.S. and their relatives around the world. Additionally, the local chapter promotes knowledge of and adherence to international humanitarian law by providing education about the Geneva Conventions, making presentations and teaching courses to the public and to Red Cross paid and volunteer staff.

All disaster services are provided to our clients free of any charge. We are not a government agency and receive no funding for the programs we offer from any government agency. We are solely supported financially by the generosity of our local communities. Should you like to make a monetary donation, make it payable to the Historic Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross and put that you want it to remain for “local programs†on your memo line. This insures that your donation stays local to assist our neighbors in their times of need.
